Making Microsoft Word Documents
Making Microsoft Word documents is quite easy.
First, you need to have a subscription to use Microsoft Office. With that, you pay a fee once per year in order to be able to download and use all of the Microsoft Office applications to your heart’s content. From there, you can begin creating Word documents too.
All you have to do is open the application to start making your document.
There is also an Office 365 option for online use, where you can create and edit documents in your web browser. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint are some of the supported Microsoft programs available.
Getting the Format You Need
Every teacher or employer may have different expectations of what your format looks like in Word documents. Regardless of what it may be, here is how you can achieve the format.
Start on the home tab. This will have your font type, size, and more options available to you.
Changing Font Style and Size
To change your font, hover your cursor over to the font subsection. From there, click on the box that says “Calibri (Body)” or whatever it says the default font is. From there, you can select the font you want to use.
Repeat the same steps for size, just moving your cursor over to the box next to the one you were working on for font type. Then you can choose what font size you need.
Changing Line Spacing
In addition, you can also play with paragraph spacing. The subsection next to font one is called “paragraph.” In there, click on the button that has the lines representing a paragraph.
You can then choose how much space you’d like between a paragraph in terms of inches. You can also consider choosing “add” or “remove space before paragraph” depending on what you need for the document.
Changing the Margins
If you need to change the size of your margins, you will have to look for that on a different tab than the “home” one. At the top of the page, look for the “layout” tab and click on it.
Once you do, you will notice that “margins” is the first button to the utmost left of the section. Click on that, and you can begin to customize your margin length.
Check Your Spelling
When you get to the end of your document, you should always check your spelling and grammar.
If you need to send your document to someone, it is always best to give it a once-over before you send it. Sometimes, though, you don’t catch everything.
To check your spelling and grammar, here’s what you need to do:
- Head to the review tab
- Click on “editor” (the top left button in the “proofing” subsection)
- Have at it
It’s as simple as that! From there, a right sidebar will open to further walk you through reviewing your document for any spelling or grammar errors.
When the spellcheck is done, you know your document is good to go then, free of errors and looking slick. However, there is still the need to save it.
Saving a Word Document
So, you’ve typed up your Word documents, and you’re feeling good about it. Let’s talk about saving that document.
Saving a Document for the First Time
You need to go to “file” and then “save as,” if you haven’t yet saved your document for the first time. From there, you can choose what to name your document and where to save it.
Click on “browse” if you want to find a different place to save your Word documents, you can look through your different options there.
If you need to save your document as a PDF and not a .doc or .docx, you can change the file type while saving it too.
If you have a PC that operates on Microsoft, chances are that you may also have it hooked up to your OneDrive/Outlook account. If that is the case, you can save it to the drive rather than to your actual computer.
You can also save it directly to the computer if you want to. It is all up to your own organizational system.
Saving a Document After Making Changes
If you have already done the “save as” part but wish to make changes to your Word documents, you can certainly do so.
Open your document and make the appropriate changes. Then, follow the same steps for “file” but click “save” instead. Alternatively, you can also click the save shortcut button at the top left of Microsoft Word.
